Just earlier this month, Nintendo released a new firmware update for the Switch which was version 5.0. This update added a few changes and added some minor stuff on the surface, but it turned out that the real purpose of this update was a massive security overhaul of the Switch OS. The drastic changes that were made resulted in a variety of third-party accessories no longer functioning, the worst of these cases being some third-party docks which unfortunately ended up bricking several systems. Now, rather unexpectedly, Nintendo has released yet another system update: version 5.0.1.

This new system update is apparently minor, with its patch notes carrying a single, familiar line:

  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience

Clearly, the company hasn’t mentioned what’s exactly been changed in this update. It’s become common to see this description applied to minor security updates. Even so, one could also theorize that this might be a response to the aforementioned ‘third-party dock bricking situation’, but we’ll have to wait and see if the tech-savvy members of the Switch community find anything major as they did with the 5.0 update.
