The main selling point of the Nintendo Switch is that it’s a hybrid system: it can function as both a home console and handheld. Due to its transformative functionality, there will naturally be people who make use of one mode more than the other. Nintendo Japan has taken notice of this and is now officially selling Switch systems without a Dock.
This new SKU is currently being sold via the My Nintendo Store for 26,978 yen. This comes to about $244 USD. That’s not a huge decrease in price, but it’s still money saved nonetheless. As you can see from the picture above, it includes the system along with a pair of Joy-Con controllers and their accompanying Strap attachments. The original SKU that we all know includes all of this plus a Joy-Con Grip, HDMI cable, Dock, and AC Adapter. That’s right, the dockless SKU does not include a charger, similar to that of many 3DS SKUs. The reason being is that this new offering is being targetted at customers who already have a Switch system in their household. Still, it’s no fun to use one charger across multiple devices, so it would have been nice if Nintendo included one in the box for this new SKU.
It’s unclear if this SKU will ever officially come to other countries. Portable systems are a bigger deal in Japan than traditional home consoles. This is a big reason as to why the Switch has become so popular there, and also why this new SKU makes sense for that region.
