Have you been aching for more content in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe beyond the recent addition of Nintendo Labo support? It looks like you’re about to get your wish. During a new clip where Nintendo managing officer Shinya Takahashi discusses some of his favorite Nintendo Switch titles, he announces that there’s more to come for the game in the future, and it’s going to be exciting trying to speculate what that may end up being.
“There will be further updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so please look forward to it,” Takahashi stated after briefing viewers on the new functionality for the Nintendo Labo’s Motorbike project.

Unfortunately, Takahashi didn’t elaborate on what kind of updates would be coming in the future, as the rest of the video shifted focus to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2. Incidentally, Splatoon 2 is getting a ton of free updates still in the future too, all the way through the end of December, according to Takahashi.
It’s possible that we could see more characters being added to the game in the form of DLC, despite the fact that there’s a veritable treasure trove of racers currently available already. There are 41, in fact, with five racers exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version. It’d be interesting to see pulls from other series, done Super Smash Bros. style, with Kirby or even Samus joining the game, but that seems unlikely. It sure would be an interesting twist, though.
It’s more likely that we’ll see a new series of tracks, or possible a game mode added, which certainly wouldn’t be awful additions, especially if they happen to be free downloads. There’s a ton of new content that could draw from more recent releases, and Mario Kart is versatile enough to draw from various different franchises, after all.
Mario Kart 8 originally made its debut back on the Wii U in 2014, with the Nintendo Switch port debuting in April 2017. It’s ended up selling over nine million copies worldwide by March 2018, and it’s the system’s second best-selling title. It’s not surprising, then, that Nintendo is continuing to support it. There’s even a Mario Kart mobile game in the works, lest we forget.
It looks like Nintendo is going to be pushing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe pretty hard in the coming days for some reason, however, as recently Nintendo was spotted filming something at Universal Hollywood’s CityWalk. According to a Redditor, it happened to be a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament. There aren’t any further details about what that might be related to, but it sure looks like it was a spectacle. Especially those costumes. Was it necessary to be dressed up? Were they filming for some sort of commercial at the same time? How hot was it there?
What could be brewing for Mario Kart fans in the near future? We’ll have to wait and see. We’ll keep you updated if any new details happen to slip out in the future.
