Not even a minute’s walk from where I live in Seoul is a little market that sells Pokémon sparkling soda. It comes in Pikachu and Squirtle varieties, for pineapple and green grape flavors respectively. The first time I saw the soda, I bought a can of Squirtle out of morbid curiosity…
And it was great!
So I went back a week later to buy a can of Pikachu–and my man Pika tasted even better! I’ve gone through a few cans now. If you ever find yourself in South Korea, check the refrigerated drinks section of your local markets for a can. It might be the best 800 won (70 cents) you spend all day!
Pokémon sparkling soda comes courtesy of Lotte, which is an absolute juggernaut of a company in Korea. They have a finger in virtually everything you can think of here. Most notably, within walking distance of my home is Lotte World, which consists of one of the largest shopping malls in the world, an aquarium, a 4D movie theater, an amusement park, and Lotte Tower, which is the fifth tallest building in the world. So, in retrospect, I’d be more surprised if Lotte weren’t selling some kind of Pokémon beverage.
