Pokémon cards

Huggins and Scotts Auctions have just sold an unopened box of “Base Set” 1st edition Pokémon TCG booster packs for $68,880. And the box even has a dent on one of its corners! In the year 2018, I had no idea Pokémon cards still held this kind of value, even the original 1st edition cards.

The kicker is that whoever bought these cards isn’t even going to be able to enjoy looking at them! To retain its value, that box is just going to have to continue sitting on some shelf, hiding its secrets forever. Is there a Charizard in there? A Blastoise? At least a Hitmonchan?! The world may never know.

But if I’m sounding way too hostile here, I should backtrack and say I’m a big comic book fan. If I could afford to buy a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the first appearance of Spider-Man, I’d absolutely do it. A ragged copy of that comic that’s on the verge of disintegration can still sell for over $12,000, and a pristine copy has sold for over $450,000. There’s a part of me that wants to buy that cheaper, disintegrating comic even as I type this news story.

So I guess what I’m really saying is–yes, I’m absolutely as crazy as this dedicated Pokémon fan, and the only difference between us is that I have less money! So I give a big kudos to the winner of this lovely, sterile box of Pokémon cards.
