Nihon Falcom has confirmed that the next title in its long-running Ys series is currently in development. What’s more, the next title won’t be a remake, rather it will be a brand new entry.

The news has come courtesy of an interview with Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo, posted by French site ActuGaming.  While the article contained various tidbits about both the company’s history and the studios’ other main series- The Legend of Heroes, it also contained confirmation of Ys IX‘s development.  Twitter user @AboveUp posted a translation of Kondo’s comment, which read as such: “Regarding the Ys series, we are working on a new game. It will not be a remake but a brand new title. It will be about Adol and it will be right after the events of Ys VIII. I hope you will look forward to it.”

Surprisingly, this goes against the expectations of much of the Ys fanbase, that a remake of Ys V would be next up. His comments reject this theory. While this may disappoint fans of that particular entry, it is exciting to know that we will be seeing where Adol’s adventures will take him next, sooner rather than later.

No further details were given on the title; however, it would be surprising if the title didn’t hit Switch, especially given the success of the late Ys VIII port. It is unknown when we’ll hear more, but Ys VIII was revealed at TGS 2014, so keep an eye out.
