If you grew up as a shooter fan in the ’90s, then chances are you remember Descent. It was touted as the next step in first-person shooters featuring six degrees of gameplay. Now it’s back in a big way!
Descent is a return to form for the ship-based first-person shooter that originally released in 1995. This reboot is made using Unreal Engine 4 and will include both a single-player campaign and multiplayer modes. It is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch, as well as PS4, Xbox One, and PC. No release date has been announced so far, although the pre-order page states “coming soon.”
Pre-order benefits were also listed with the following:
- PC Beta starting later this year
- A custom version of the Generation III “Viola” ship w/ exclusive paint job
- Special PC Beta challenges to unlock exclusive pre-season cosmetic rewards
- Multipass upgrade for multiplayer seasons 1 & 2 with additional gameplay challenges
- “Secret Missions” DLC with additional single-player missions, landing later in 2019!
True To Form
The Switch has had retro revivals before, but the addition of Descent feels right at home. There’s no confirmation of this but it would be intriguing to see if motion controls will come into play. Being able to fly in all directions would certainly lend itself to that if done well. Having multiplayer options, including co-op, could also make good use of the Joy-Con here. There are some fun possibilities to modernize Descent beyond just the visuals.
There has been some recent love for the franchise beyond this reboot. A Kickstarter campaign for Overload was funded and developed by the team largely responsible for the original Descent games. This reboot was also originally crowdfunded by a different team under the name Descent: Underground. Publisher Little Orbit reached out to help fund the project further and expand on the single-player campaign. There are plans for this title to be the first chapter in the franchise’s reboot.
