In a recent interview with Walmart Canada, Nintendo’s Andrew Collins was himself unsure how to pronounce the name of King K. Rool. Apparently, Walmart Canada’s interviewer pronounced the character’s name as “cruel,” combining the K with the “Rool” to make one word. The full transcript is below:
Andrew: Yeah, and that is a beautiful looking stage. What about the other character that was announced at the end of that trailer?
Paul: Do you mean K. Rool? [Note: I pronounced it ‘cruel’]
Andrew: Yeah, that’s the one I was talking about. I wanted to hear how you said his name because we’re still trying to figure it out. Is it ‘Krool’ or ‘Kay-Rool’ or ‘Ka-Rool’?
Paul: What do you think his name is?
Andrew: I’m thinking Ka-Rool, there needs to be more research on it though. [laughs]
This one has flown straight over my head for as long as I have heard it. I always pronounced the two parts of the name separately. The combination is one that is new to me.
King K. Rool is appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a playable character. The game launches on December 7 in North America.

Eli buys virtually every Nintendo title that comes out but has expanded his collection to include amiibo. He hasn’t taken them out of their boxes, though, so he might be a bit insane. When not playing video games, Eli likes writing about politics and games. He also runs a decent amount. Outside.
