Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is Sega’s own horse in the racing game…race. Maybe not my best analogy. It’s not nearly as well known or popular as something like Mario Kart but has way more of an individual personality than people give it credit for. The game has its own style and is generally known to be a quality racing title.
That’s why it was all the more disappointing when we found out the follow-up, Team Sonic Racing, has been delayed until 2019. But, to hold us over, Sega has dropped some new insights at the Tokyo Game Show 2018.
Tons of new footage at the Tokyo Game Show
During this year’s Tokyo Game Show, a video released that showed a more behind-the-scenes side of Team Sonic Racing. Series producer Takashi Iizuka goes through and expands on all the new mechanics in the game as well as his own thought process. From this interview, it’s obvious that Team Sonic Racing is very different from the last game in a number of ways.
No more transformations
Primarily Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed was all about the transforming vehicles. Diddy Kong Racing is probably the aptest example of this mechanic if you’re having trouble picturing it. This time around, the characters have only been shown in cars and the focus is placed on the cooperative aspect instead.
The thought process behind the team gameplay
Iizuka was inspired to create a team-based racing game while watching his kid play other kart racers. He felt that one player winning and having fun while the rest were unhappy didn’t seem like the best experience. So in Team Sonic Racing, there are teams of three that cooperate throughout the race and the cumulative score of the three determines the winner.
Takashi then talks about the new courses in the game, such as Wisp Circuit, Ice Mountain, and Market street. These courses look radically diverse, and with returning courses, the game has over 21 different maps. Next, the video focused on the different character class types which are Speed, Technique, and Power.
The racer classes
You can create any combination of these three classes for your team to create incredibly balanced, or overly powerful combinations. To make things simple:
- Speed – Highest top speed, but has poor acceleration
- Technique – Handles the best and has great acceleration, middle of the road otherwise
- Power – Slowest top speed and acceleration, but is an overall tank of a car.
This is a series that was originally falsely accused of being a clone. But now it’s clear that they’re creating their own racing ecosystem. And from our interview with Derek Littlewood, the design director behind Team Sonic Racing, the team is putting a lot into this game that’ll hopefully be worth the wait.
