Everyone remembers that amazing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate cutscene that left Kirby as the sole survivor of video games. It was what set us up for the reveal of World of Light. Since this is the de facto “Story Mode” in the game, fans have been wondering just how much story will play a part.
According to Nintendo Treehouse’s JC Rodrigo, World of Light’s story will take a major backseat to the gameplay.
“You will see some [cutscenes], but it’s really more on focusing on the loot grind, and that flow of getting Spirits. It’s more about the matches and the way of collecting stuff you have an affinity for – a certain IP or franchise you love and you’re just like, ‘I really need this!’ It’s more about that than anything else, but you may see a couple here and there.”
While that may seem disappointing for diehard fans, it makes sense with the nature of the mode itself. You are exploring a world, getting into battles, collecting spirits, and powering them up. As JC stated above, it is a loot grind which has become commonplace in popular games today. This will also be the hook to keep Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players going in World of Light alone.
