The Game Awards for 2018 is nigh, and the internet is abuzz with rumors and hype for the annual gaming event. In the flurry of chatter and speculation, a rumor has emerged that the Metroid Prime Trilogy will be announced during The Game Awards. To bolster the rumor, Swedish retailer Inet has listed the trilogy on its site with a possible release date of February 2019.  Strangely, however, the site has indicated the game isn’t yet official and is “thought” to be announced at The Game Awards.

Is there any evidence to support the rumor?

Like everything on the internet (Sorry Grinch Theory believers), question everything. Be skeptical and take all of these unconfirmed hype tidbits with the finest grains of salt. While there is no evidence that this game is about to be announced, there are events that have occurred that make it feel logical.

For instance, we know that Metroid Prime 4 is in development thanks to a brief E3 teaser last year. Who wants to start a series with a game that has a 4 in its title? Well, Nintendo has seen success in bringing Wii U titles forward to the Switch like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Why not bring the trilogy of games that lead into the big Metroid Prime 4 release to the current Switch audience?

Nintendo Life has also pointed out that in September the president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime, appeared in a photo with the host and producer of The Game Awards, Geoff Keighley, on Twitter. In the photo Reggie is seen wearing a Metroid shirt. At the time, this was enough to send the internet into a speculation frenzy about a possible Game Awards announcement. To further align with this rumor, one must recall that Reggie also took to The Game Awards stage last year to announce ports of Bayonetta 1 & 2 on the Nintendo Switch in advance of Bayonetta 3 – an identical scenario to the one being suspected for Metroid Prime.

Despite the planets seemingly being aligned to make this possible, it is still important to temper expectations for unofficial speculation. The internet can be cruel and is great at ensnaring hopefuls who want to believe. So, sit tight and just wait a day or so, and we will then know for sure. What do you think of this rumor? Is it something you’d want to see? Do you think it’s announcement is likely? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
