The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time anniversary

To date, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is unmatched in the world of critical darlings. It is the only title ever to receive the Metacritic score of a 99. And to answer the question before it’s even asked, no, there are no games that have ever made it to a perfect 100 score on the review aggregator site. If you don’t believe me, check out the official posting on Metacritic yourself. Perhaps, you can spot some of your favorites numbered among the greats as you scroll through the list.

Why does this matter any more now than it did a year ago?

I’m sure the question will be posed by many. But, in the realm of the video games industry, 2018 was massive. The year was packed full of AAA blockbusters, smash hit after smash hit, and even saw one of the largest spikes in indie offerings we’ve seen in a long time.

Pundits and games media in general have been talking relentlessly about the incredible year 2018 was for gaming. The Game Awards was a visual display of that. And if it I can’t put it any more succinctly, we’re talking about games that not only broke ground, but punched a hole straight through the center of the Earth. (In no particular order) God of War, Return of the Obra Dinn, Red Dead Redemption 2, Tetris Effect, Celeste, Monster Hunter World, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Hollow Knight, and so many more dazzled gamers and critics everywhere. The trend continued into 2019 with games like the killer Resident Evil 2 remake.

I think I’m beating a dead horse here, so I’m sure you get the point. After all this time, Ocarina has (appropriately) stood the test of time. It may not be your favorite title ever, and many might disagree. But, that’s the beauty of Metacritic as it aggregates the opinions from the critical collective to come to an average. Now, I think it’s only appropriate that Nintendo honor the game atop the highest pedestal with a proper remake. It seems unlikely, but despite the realistic outlook, my wishful thinking always keeps the possibility planted in my mind.
