UPDATE: The headline mistakingly said March 26 rather than the real launch date of March 28, 2019.
Nintendo hasn’t touched the Pilotwings franchise in quite a number of years at this point. There’s no telling if the company will ever come around to the concept again in the near future, but in the meantime, Pilotwings fans will be able to fill the void on Switch with an upcoming game from indie studio BitPlanet—Ultrawings Flat.
Ultrawings Flat is an alternate version to the original Ultrawings which is a VR title that launched on Steam back in the Summer of 2017. This new version strips away the requirement of a VR headset, thus opening up the virtual cockpit to anyone that wants to get up in the air with just a regular controller.
The game includes four different aircraft to choose from, each with their own unique characteristics and flight model. Ultrawings takes more of a simulator approach than that of PilotWings, though it is very similar in the fact that you will be using each aircraft to complete a variety of missions around an open-world island environment that include tasks like air races, aerial photo shoots and fly-through ring challenges. As missions are completed, in-game currency will be earned which can then be used to buy new aircraft and airports that are located around the environment.
Here’s the gameplay trailer:
Ultrawings Flat will be soaring its way onto Switch and other platforms on March 28 for the price of $19.99 and is already available for prepurchasing
The developer has already hooked us up with a review code for the game, so do be sure to check back on release day for the review.
