royal

Just yesterday, Atlus unveiled a trailer for its updated RPG title, Persona 5: The Royal (not Reloaded). Very, VERY little information was unveiled. In fact, the video is just an announcement of an announcement. However, one particularly crafty dataminer connected the footage with information pulled from Smash Bros. Ultimate files. The results are intriguing.

This short clip does not take my heart away

First, let’s look at the broadcast:

According to a translation by way of Gematsu, someone asks the question, “What do you think of the Phantom Thieves?” To which a new female character responds, “I think helping people is a wonderful thing, but if I had to say, I don’t like them. I don’t think the Phantom Thieves’ methods will make the world a better place or help anyone. In the end, I feel like you can only solve that yourself.”

Outside of this new lady, the only other confirmed news tidbits are that Royal is due for PS4, and more concrete information is coming April 24, 2019.

What does this have to do with Smash Bros. Ultimate?

Last month, Dr. HyperCake, who has a Ph.D. in datamining and baking, found text files in Smash Bros. Ultimate referencing a “Jane” and “pony_hair,” along with a “Jack,” a possible nod to Joker. After viewing Atlus’ new video, the good physician shared this on Twitter:

What connection will Jane have with Joker and Ultimate?

Personally, I can see Jane being an assist trophy or a part of Joker’s Final Smash. While there is some speculation that Jane will be an alternate costume for Joker, I’m not so sure. Jane can very well be a new protagonist that players can control in Royal, but her criticism of the Phantom Thieves does not make me believe she is going to be part of the gang. Therefore, perhaps she will have her own story that runs parallel to Joker’s? Hopefully, we’ll find everything out in April.

Adoring fans, what do you make of the datamine and its possible connection to Royal? Do you find it odd that the enhanced version of Persona 5 has not been confirmed for Switch? Answer these questions or ask your own in the comment field!
