In an interview with 4Gamer translated in part by Nintendo Soup, the developers of Tetris 99 revealed the game was originally created with 100 players in mind. However, the team opted to use 99 players when they saw how much better the game looked.
With 99 players, 49 screens can be displayed on each side of the screen, making yours the 99th. When there are 100 players, this isn’t possible.
Additionally, the developers discussed how the idea of Tetris 99 came about. Simply enough, someone pitched the idea of a battle royale Tetris game and everyone fell in love with it. The making of Tetris 99 lasted from April 2018 to February 2019. This puts the development time at a remarkable 10 months. Shortly after, the game was revealed and released in the same month.
About a week ago, Nintendo revealed the first round of DLC for Tetris 99. This new content will bring a mode where you can face off against 98 CPU players. Additionally, you’ll be able to play a Marathon mode that serves as a more traditional Tetris experience.
If all of that excites you, don’t forget the third Tetris 99 Maximus Cup starts tomorrow. Make sure to rack up enough points for that special classic theme!
What do you guys think about all this? Are you surprised Tetris 99 had such a short development time? Are you still enjoying the game regularly? Let us know in the comments below!
I love all kinds of video games. I personally find the most enjoyment in JRPGs, Visual Novels, and pretty much anything Nintendo makes. I’m always open to discovering new types of games, so I’ll be happy to check out anything someone suggests.
