Ever since Pokémon GO took the world by storm, mobile developers have been looking for ways to emulate its success. There are lots of different twists, but many games follow the same basic formula. Take a popular game experience, and use augmented reality and GPS to make it a part of the real world. Toss in some stations where players can pick up free goodies, and you’ve got yourself a game! The latest team to jump on this trend is Microsoft, and they’re bringing one of the most popular games in history into the equation. Today they unveiled Minecraft Earth for Android and iOS.

    Get ready for Minecraft Earth

This upcoming game lets you build and craft on your phone, then place your creations in the real world. For example, you can transform your house into a golden castle, and other players with the app will see it as such. You can find randomly placed items called “tapables” that generate new resources to fuel your creativity. You can also team up with friends to take on Adventures placed throughout the world by the developers. According to TheVerge, these adventures range from peaceful to challenging and offer an impressively uniform experience for everyone involved.

You can fight monsters, break down structures for resources together, and even stand in front of a friend to block them from physically killing a virtual sheep. All of the blocks that are collected during an adventure are shared with fellow players, so there are no player-versus-player battles here to kill each other and steal materials. You’ll even see the tools that fellow players have in their hands on your phone’s screen, alongside their username.

    Collect, explore, collaborate, and survive!

In Minecraft Earth, players can work together to create, and you can share those creations with anyone on your friend list. The more you build, the more you’ll level up and gain access to more materials. You’ll also acquire in-game currency that can be spent on rare items like potions. Here’s a breakdown of just some of the game’s exciting features, courtesy of Microsoft:

    • Collect! Minecraft Earth features many of the mobs you know and love, along with a bunch of new ones we can’t wait to show you. Over time, you’ll get the chance to discover unique variants, and use them to populate your builds. Minecraft pigs parading around your local park? That’s about to become your reality.
    • Explore! Your real-life neighborhood is about to take on a new dimension. Gather resources, take on challenges, and experience a whole new world to discover!
    • Collaborate! Build even better by teaming up with other Minecraft Earth players. You can craft amazing creations together. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
    • Survive! Sure, you’re good at fighting hostile mobs in Minecraft, but are you ready to battle Minecraft mobs in real life? Best of luck, because we’re going to put your survival skills to the test!

If you’re interested in getting your hands on this game as soon as possible, you can sign up for a limited beta. The beta will kick off sometime this summer. After Microsoft works out the kinks and adds some more content, they’ll launch the full game around the globe. Can it reach the same heights as Pokémon GO?
