Your favorite realistic Pokémon artist RJ Palmer is at it again. This time, he’s sharing concept art of Pikachu from the Detective Pikachu film. These early drafts of Pikachu more closely resemble the gruff-looking detective from the original game. Palmer also added that he was pushing for a Danny DeVito angle at one point. The likeness is uncanny.
This was a very early pass at showing different emotions Pikachu would have. I was very into the idea of Pikachu having bald cheeks to conduct the lightning but admittedly I don't think it would have worked nearly as well as the final design. pic.twitter.com/TnPpDBxUuX

As you can see, Palmer seemed to have a lot of fun coming up with these concepts. Personally, I kind of like seeing Pikachu with bald cheeks, but I can see why the idea was tossed aside.
If you haven’t seen it already, Palmer is well known for his realistic Pokémon designs. Most recently, he reimagined the three starters from Pokémon Sword and Shield. Make sure to follow him on Twitter for more art like this!
As for Detective Pikachu, the film seems to be doing really well. It even beat out Avengers: Endgame at the global box office last weekend. Personally, as a Pokémon fan, I think you should go see it if you haven’t already.
What do you guys think about the most recent art from RJ Palmer? What other concept art would you like to see from Detective Pikachu? Let us know in the comments below!
I love all kinds of video games. I personally find the most enjoyment in JRPGs, Visual Novels, and pretty much anything Nintendo makes. I’m always open to discovering new types of games, so I’ll be happy to check out anything someone suggests.
