Animal Crossing: New Horizons cloud saves

Longtime fans have been begging Nintendo for Animal Crossing on Switch, and now they finally have a release date. Animal Crossing: New Horizons launches on March 20, 2020. That means the game has been delayed, but it’s for a good cause. The finished product should be well worth the wait, but it will also be missing a key Switch feature: Cloud saves.

No Cloud Saves for New Horizons

Nintendo Switch originally launched without that ability, but it’s now available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. However, Nintendo has disabled the features on certain games. Unfortunately, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has joined that list. Producer Higashi Nogami explained this decision in a recent interview.

Question: With the introduction of cloud saves and automatic saves, how will you handle Mr. Resetti’s interventions?

Nogami: New Horizons will not be compatible with cloud backups to avoid manipulating time, which remains one of the founding concepts of the series.

Nogami side-stepped the mention of Resetti, but he also confirmed that the cloud will not be an option. Nintendo worries that people will use cloud saves to “cheat” the game in some way. Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn’t a particularly competitive game, but Nintendo is still concerned. This isn’t that big of a deal at all in terms of gameplay, but it could still pose problems for some. If your save file is corrupted or your Switch is lost or stolen, you won’t have a backup option.
