The Nintendo Enthusiast team had the opportunity to try out Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order at E3 2019. Despite having some qualms with the game, we had a lot of fun. However, I was able to try the game out in single-player mode as well. Surprisingly, this was a more enjoyable experience! Here’s our initial reaction to our hands-on time with the game. In MAU3, playing in four-player co-op can be a little too chaotic when all four heroes are beating down baddies and using special attacks. It quickly gets hard to keep track of your character. Not only that, but everyone is sharing one camera, so the further apart you are, the smaller you are on the screen. Throw in minor framerate issues (which could be fixed before launch) and you get an explosive mess on screen. For many, that’s probably all you want from a game like this. For me, however, I want to be able to tell how my hero holds their own on the battlefield. Which is tough in co-op.

In single-player mode, there is no war for the camera with your partners. You can even drop the camera behind your back like a traditional third-person action game (Bayonetta, Darksiders, etc.). This not only helps you see what’s happening during battle, but also gives you a better look at the game’s fantastic animations and vibrant powers. And lastly, from what I could tell, the game was running a bit better when playing solo.

Given that Ultimate Alliance 3 focuses heavily on story and interacting with a slew of Marvel heroes, maybe playing solo is the way to go if you’re wanting an engrossing experience. Then again, surely you’ll miss out on some memorable couch co-op moments with friends. For this instance, I think it’s a give and take scenario.

The world of Ultimate Alliance 3 feels alive thanks to the dozens of heroes you’ll encounter throughout your journey.
