Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

One of my favorite handheld franchises of all time is Professor Layton. From the exciting stories to the puzzles, there’s something about the games that constantly keep me coming back. If you’ve never experienced one before, now’s a great chance to dive in. Level-5 released Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box earlier today on iOS and Android devices.

Originally released on the Nintendo DS in 2009, Diabolical Box is the second game in the Layton franchise. The game follows the titular Professor Hershel Layton and his assistant Luke as they travel in search of answers regarding the death of the professor’s mentor. Along the way, the duo meets a zany cast of characters that contribute to a story full of exciting twists and turns.

It wouldn’t be a Professor Layton game without puzzles. Though the game’s puzzles start off simple, they ramp up in difficulty. Do yourself a favor. Don’t let this discourage you. Don’t make the mistake of judging the game based on the opening puzzles, or you’ll miss an incredible journey. I did this when it first released but later gave it a second chance. I’m forever grateful that I did.

Diabolical Box features over 150 puzzles to test your mettle. These range from brain teasers to sliding puzzles to trick questions. The game also features voiced dialogue and animated cutscenes to break up the puzzle action. Unfortunately, if you’ve played Diabolical Box before, you shouldn’t find anything new here. But even without new content, it’s always nice to have a classic ported over for accessibility.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is now available on iOS and Android devices for a single payment of $9.99. So what are you waiting for? Go pick it up now! And if you want more, there are other Layton games available as well!
