The New York Police Department has confirmed that Nintendo-centric YouTuber Desmond “Etika” Amofah has passed away at the age of 29. His body was located in Manhattan’s East River yesterday, following his belongings being found on the Manhattan Bridge on June 23. Prior to this, Etika had uploaded a video to his YouTube channel (since removed) titled “I’m sorry,” which had sounded disturbingly like a suicide letter.
Etika previously had a mental health struggle last October, when he deleted his YouTube videos, uploaded a bizarre new video, and said on Reddit that it was his time to die. At that time, loved ones intervened to help him and it seemed he was recovering. But this past April, Etika threatened suicide again. This series of events has unfortunately culminated in the episode before us now.
Etika was beloved among Nintendo fans, and he referred to his fans as “JoyCon Boyz.” In fact, this creator was well known enough that Masahiro Sakurai himself retweeted one of his reaction videos. Etika will be deeply missed by his myriad supporters.
