Old Navy, Super Mario Bros. 3 backpack, and Super Mario World

It has always amazed me, the things people choose to be upset over. This character wasn’t included, or that thing didn’t look like the real thing! However, I side with the collective hate mob when companies make attempts to include a group of people, like gamers, and try to market to them. That is exactly the case with one particular Super Mario backpack from Old Navy.

Take a closer look

At a glance, it doesn’t look like anything out of the ordinary. In fact, I would even argue that they did a nice job putting together the print and overall design of the bag. But, when you look a little closer, you’ll notice that this Super Mario Bros. 3 bag isn’t quite right.

For those who can’t immediately spot what’s wrong with it, can you really call yourself a fan? I kid. But anyone who even grew up playing Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros. 3 might recognize the power-ups and characters, like Yoshi, weren’t shared between the two games. They were not only two years apart in release but were also released on two completely different consoles.

There are plenty of examples of Super Mario or other Nintendo properties not getting the right representation in popular culture; Old Navy certainly isn’t the only offender. The Super Mario Bros. movie is one of the most notorious examples of taking something that fans cherish and attempting to turn it into a money-printing machine without much success. And don’t feel too bad for Mario; he isn’t the only one who has fallen victim to people not quite knowing him.

I would still consider picking up the Super Mario backpack. If anything, you could pack in your Nintendo GameSwitch, or maybe just store it in your closet as a keepsake, right next to your Adibas jacket, but right above your Noike shoes.
