Compared to Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online initially fell short when it came to subscriber benefits. While cheaper, players bemoaned paying for the same peer-to-peer online connection and yet another slow drip-feed of NES games via NES Online. However, Nintendo is starting to catch up, offering occasional in-game freebies, Vouchers (now expired), Tetris 99, and member-exclusive items. Starting today, a new benefit rolls out for NSO subscribers, this time in the form of Game Trials.
Try before you buy
Compared to demos, Game Trials gives Nintendo Switch Online members free reign on a game for a limited time. Should players choose, they can then buy the game at a discounted rate with their save files carrying over.
Nintendo of Europe confirmed earlier today that subscribers can soon demo Mario Tennis Aces as a Game Trial. From July 8th to the 13th, Switch Online members in Europe can download and play the full game for free. Additionally, Mario Tennis Aces will be on sale from the 8th until the 20th for 33% off.
On that note, Nintendo of Japan announced Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will have a Game Trial as well on the eShop, with similar benefits. The Captain Toad Trial will last from the 5th to the 11th, with a 30% off sale for the base game lasting until the 18th; the bundle with the Special Episode DLC will be on sale for 25% off during that time.
At the time of writing, Game Trials are not yet available for Switch Online subscribers in North America, though I’m sure it will only be a matter of time before Nintendo of America announces something of the like. In any case, I might take advantage of these Game Trials depending on what title is being demoed. What about you guys? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
UPDATE: Nintendo of America has just announced Game Trials for North America! Like Europe, Switch Online subscribers in North America can also download Mario Tennis Aces for free:
