Jim Carrey talks about Sonic movie

Jim Carrey is doing a new Showtime series called Kidding, for which he did a presentation at the Television Critics Association. However, during the event, discussion turned to talk of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Carrey plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the film, so his opinion certainly matters. And it sounds like he isn’t crazy about the fact that the Sonic movie is receiving changes based on public backlash.

Carrey said the following: “I don’t know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation of [the movie]. We’ll see what that entails because sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something and then when it gets it, ‘I just wanted it, I didn’t care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon.’ Ownership of anything is going out the window for all of us.”

I fully agree with that. Inevitably, a good fraction of people who hated on Sonic’s design were people that had no intention of seeing the Sonic movie in the first place. And just because fans are fans doesn’t suddenly make them an authority on the way things should be in a franchise. Artists need to be given (at least mostly) free rein to produce something unique and surprising. Our Andrew Gonzalez certainly believes that anyway.

Let us know how you feel about Jim Carrey’s comments in the, uh, comments below.
