Nintendo is surprisingly stingy with its official flagship stores. There’s Nintendo NY in New York City, which was only recently joined by a second location in Israel. There are also a handful of Pokémon Center locations in Japan. Well, now we have a new one on the way. London is getting in on the action with their very own Pokémon Center.
Echoes of Galar
Fittingly, this London store will be used to advertise the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield titles, which take place in the Galar region. This new area is heavily inspired by the United Kingdom, so what better way of showing it off than by selling sweet merch at a Pokémon Center in Britain’s biggest city?
The official Pokémon UK social media accounts were teasing the reveal all day yesterday, culminating in the following image:
Sadly, this Pokémon Center won’t be permanent. It’s a pop-up location that will only last for the month leading up to Pokémon Sword and Shield’s release. However, it will feature products exclusive to the UK location.
The dearth of official Nintendo stores around the world, and especially official Pokémon Center locations, has always baffled me. As someone who’s lucky enough to visit Nintendo NY on a regular basis (my day job is located around the corner), I can vouch for the constant tourist presence and local community building that is a feature of the brick-and-mortar store. Still, this looks like a step in the right direction. And hopefully, if it does well, other cities will see similar projects.
Pokémon Center deets
The London Pokémon Center will open on October 18 and stay open until the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield on November 15. It will appear in the Westfield London, Ariel Way, Shepherd’s Bush, W12 7GF.
