There has been much debate as to whether or not Nintendo would go beyond just offering free NES games with its Switch Online service. As the confirmed successor to the now-defunct Virtual Console platform, many retro fans have been not-so-patiently waiting for Nintendo to make a move with enhancing Switch Online. It looks like the waiting game may finally be coming to an end soon.

Documentation has recently surfaced of an FCC filing by Nintendo which shows an illustration of what is clearly a rearview representation of a SNES controller. This file was discovered by a user on Resetera that goes by the handle Link83.

As Eurogamer pointed out, take note of the model number starting with ‘HAC’. This is used for all Switch units and Switch-related accessories. This would put the new controller in the same space as the NES controllers Nintendo released alongside Switch Online last September.

Speaking of September, the first anniversary of Switch Online will be next month. So, if there’s any time for Nintendo to make an announcement of a big upgrade, it would be then. So, keep your radars on for the next few weeks, as you know Nintendo has the habit of just dropping bombs out of nowhere.
