The Pokémon World Championships 2019 just kicked off this morning, and we’ve already got a new look at the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield. In a newly released trailer, we got a detailed look at some of the new abilities and items we can expect to face come November.
In terms of abilities, the first one shown off was Galarian Weezing’s Neutralizing Gas. This ability will come in handy competitively, as it negates all other abilities in play. This means that Pokémon with Levitate, for instance, will be affected by Ground-type moves such as Earthquake! Corviknight also has a new hidden ability called Mirror Armor which reflects stat-lowering moves.
A few new items were showcased as well. The first is “Room Service,” a held item that lowers the Pokémon‘s speed during Trick Room. For the uninitiated, Trick Room reverses the battle rules such that slower Pokémon attack first, thus having a lower speed is beneficial. The other new item is the “Eject Pack.” This held item automatically recalls a Pokémon is its stats are lowered, which nullifies these stat changes.
As someone who’s not particularly versed in the world of competitive Pokémon, I’m excited to see how these new changes impact the scene going forward! Luckily, we should see the competitive scene ramp up quickly post-launch since Pokémon Sword and Shield are the official titles for the 2020 World Championships!
