Nintendo will partner with ELEAGUE to bring the 2019 Nintendo World Championships to CBS. ELEAGUE will put together a three-part series showcasing each of the three tournaments featured at the Championships. This includes the Super Mario Maker 2 invitational and the finals for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2.

The first episode of ELEAGUE Presents The Nintendo 2019 World Championships will air on CBS on Sunday, August 25. Viewers can catch this episode at 1 p.m. EST. The second episode is set to air on Saturday, September 7 at 2 p.m. Fans can then catch the final episode on Saturday, September 14 at 1:30 p.m.

ELEAGUE’s TV mini-series will not merely replay the stream of the 2019 Nintendo World Championships. It will include the behind-the-scenes footage of the events, presumably including player interviews. Therefore, this network television event will give Nintendo fans the chance to see the World Championships from a different perspective.

CBS and the Nintendo World Championships

This will not be ELEAGUE’s first time bringing an event like the Nintendo World Championships to a television network. Previously, the organization produced a televised version of the E3 2018 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate invitational for TBS. As a result, it is clear that ELEAGUE knows how to convey the excitement of a Nintendo event through television.

While this is only ELEAGUE’s second partnership with Nintendo, it is their seventh series to debut in 2019. Through its programs, the organization seeks to promote esports to a TV-watching audience. ELEAGUE has experience with many esports beyond just Splatoon and Smash.

Even outside of ELEAGUE’s TV programs, it seems that esports are slowly gaining a more widespread audience. One example is ABC, which airs matches for the competitive Overwatch League. CBS’ airing of ELEAGUE Presents The Nintendo 2019 World Championships may be another step in the direction of normalizing esports.
