I grew up on licensed video games. As a kid, if I saw a SpongeBob video game and Metal Gear on the same shelf, I was way more likely to pick up SpongeBob. For the longest time, I thought I was the only one who enjoyed licensed games. But now that Battle for Bikini Bottom is getting remastered, I don’t feel so alone.
With some recent footage released for Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, I started to think about some of my favorite licensed games, and also generally about the best licensed games. Many people probably think of GoldenEye 007 immediately. But personally, I have a soft spot for one platforming adventure game in particular.
Tak and the Power of Juju was plastered in advertisements everywhere when I was a kid. So how could my young, impressionable mind not buy into this? Honestly, Nickelodeon could have thrown together any by-the-books platformer, but they went all out with Tak.
Tak features big open levels that encourage exploration. It’s a huge collect-a-thon with tons of optional power-ups to collect and secret pathways to explore. There are so many things to collect that I’ve never actually completed everything. Maybe I’ll go back to it soon.
