My Zelda Quest Episode 4: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Welcome to episode 4 of my quest to complete every chronological Zelda game up to Link’s Awakening before the release of the remake next month. For this episode, I played one of the greatest games ever made — The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

I’ve played Ocarina of Time over and over again — at least once per year — since its North American debut back in 1998. Yet, even after over 20 years, every playthrough remains as enjoyable and entertaining as the first. The game’s greatness is not just my opinion, either. It shall always remain a favorite among critics and fans alike. (Just check out its Metacritic scores and you’ll see what I mean.) No other game in the history of video games has ever stood the test of — wait for it — time like this (ha)!

Ocarina of Time: a time-tested staple of the Legend of Zelda franchise

I played the GameCube release of Ocarina of Time for this article. This version of the game was originally a preorder bonus for Wind Waker back in 2002. It is also one of the best versions available. My playthrough took me around 18 hours in total. I even took extra time to make sure I grabbed every Gold Skulltula, Great Fairy spell, bottle, and heart piece (except the impossible one in the Gerudo Fortress) in the game. And even after all that, I still had a fantastic time playing it. The game is a staple of the Zelda franchise for good reason.

Ocarina of Time has always been incredibly special to me. It kicked off my lifetime love of adventure and role-playing games. I had tried other Zelda titles, but I was pretty young and it was difficult for me to wrap my head around them. However, something about Ocarina of Time was different, and The Legend of Zelda has been my favorite game series (and complete obsession) ever since.

Ocarina of Time was the very first 3D Zelda game. The extra dimension allowed developers to play with several interesting new items and level designs that had never before been possible (like the Iron Boots and pretty much every mechanic throughout the Shadow Temple). In addition to the game’s technological achievements, Ocarina of Time was also the first to introduce time travel as a gameplay mechanic. Never mind the fact that the time travel feature was basically just an overly convenient way for Nintendo to justify stealing an orphan’s childhood. But whatever. It’s their franchise to do with as they please.

Okay, I promise I’m done making terrible jokes for this article. Next up, I’ll be playing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. So, why not “borrow” a spyglass from your little sister and join me on Outset Island? Just make sure and bring a coat. Why? Because the weather might get a little… windy! (Okay, now I’m done.)
