In 1996, Atlus split up the Shin Megami Tensei franchise with a little new subseries we now know as Persona. With thirteen games under its belt since, the Persona series continued to gain international traction, with 2016’s show-stopping Persona 5 leading the fray. As of October 2018, parent company Sega revealed to investors that the series reached a collective 9.3 million units sold. Now, Atlus confirmed that the series has now officially surpassed 10 million units in lifetime sales!

One last surprise

The developer shared the milestone via the Persona Channel blog. Of those 10 million, Persona 5 is said to have sold a collective 2.7 million between the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions. Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth for the Nintendo 3DS, which released internationally this past June, also helped with that last stretch.

In addition to that reveal, Atlus will be hosting a special televised event for the upcoming Persona 5 Royal in Japan on August 30, featuring live performances by Lyn. The Persona 5: The Animation OVA Proof of Justice will also follow the broadcast.

Overall, the series has certainly come a long way from humble beginnings! However, I cannot help but lament that most Persona games only ever launched on PlayStation systems. Sure, Persona 5‘s Joker stole the show in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as its first DLC fighter; the Warriors spinoff Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers is also on its way for the Nintendo Switch.

Unfortunately, Atlus still has no plans to bring Persona 5 Royal (or previous installments for that matter) to the Switch, and we can’t help but feel that’s a huge missed opportunity. It would certainly push the Persona series faster towards another sales milestone!

At the end of the day though, a milestone of 10 million is still impressive. With that, Persona has all but become a central IP for Sega among the likes of Yakuza and Sonic the Hedgehog. Let us know which Persona title is your favorite in the comments!
