Shantae and the seven sirens

The first gameplay footage of Shantae and the Seven Sirens has been uploaded by GameXplain. The footage shows off the demo available at Pax West 2019. We get to see a full dungeon, a transformation, and a boss fight, all tied together with the beautiful new art style.

Shantae and the Seven Sirens looks true to its roots as an explorative platformer. I’ve heard the series called Metroidvania before, but I’ve always thought that they felt more like sidescrolling 2D Zelda-likes. Taking a look at the gameplay, it’s clear that the item/transformation based puzzle-solving is still a core element of the new game.

Shantae gains a new power that allows her to turn into a lizard that can dash and stick to walls. It’s similar to her classic monkey transformation, but with a little more zip to it. For one, you won’t have to hold down a button to prepare it. Instead, it appears to be an instantaneous transformation.

We don’t get to see any of the new fusion system coming to Shantae and the Seven Sirens or get a feel for how the monster cards work. Still, it’s nice to see the same level of gameplay and graphical polish we always expect from WayForward. And boy does this game look pretty.
