amiibo

Despite slowing down on releasing new figures, Nintendo hasn’t given up on amiibo. During today’s post-Direct Smash showcase, director Masahiro Sakurai announced that three more are coming later this month.

In a hilarious reveal, Sakurai started by presenting a Squirtle amiibo. This was then followed by Ivysaur. Now, for anyone who’s familiar with Pokémon Trainer in Smash, you would think that the next amiibo would be Charizard, as it’s the last Pokémon the character can send out. However, Sakurai surprised us all as the master of stealth himself, Snake, appeared instead. I’m surprised they didn’t pull him out from under a cardboard box, but I suppose that would’ve been too obvious.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate utilizes amiibo in the same way the prior incarnation did. You can load the fighter into the game, and fight against them for training. In exchange, the figure fighter will grow stronger, and may even learn new abilities as it grows. You can even get presents by scanning characters who aren’t in Smash.

The last batch of amiibo launched late this past July. Though I’m still waiting on my Joker amiibo (and eventually Banjo), I’m sure I’ll be picking these up too! Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to get them. This trio will be launching on September 20th for around $16!
