Link's Awakening Ballad of the Wind Fish gets lyrics

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is one of the most well-regarded games in the storied franchise. Its quirky characters, fun mechanics, and memorable tunes continue to captivate fans over 26 years later. However, one piece in particular stands out as a central point in the game’s plot: “Ballad of the Wind Fish”. To advertise the upcoming remake, Nintendo has been showing off bits of footage rather frequently. Today, they released a commercial that features the haunting melody and gives it lyrics.

The arrangement is played over some of the game’s most important moments. Marin discovering the shipwrecked hero by the beach.  The duet in Animal Village. The mischievous raccoon. The meeting on the shore. The parting of the falls. The entrance to the tower. Approaching the Egg of the Wind Fish.

Thus far, the advertising has focused on the fun aspects of the game. This commercial, with its somber instrumentation, deliberate tempo, and detached, echoing lyrics show my personal favorite aspect of Link’s Awakening. Underneath the colorful trappings of the tropical island, there’s the melancholy feeling of a dream approaching its end.

This is the first time that the “Ballad of the Wind Fish” has been given official lyrics. Roughly translated, the first verse goes something like, “dreams don’t show up when you want them to.” I hope that Nintendo releases a full track soon.

What do you think of this new commercial with lyrics? Does it increase your anticipation for the upcoming remake? Does it make you want to awaken the Wind Fish? Let us know!
