Zelda Breath of the Wild Idyllic Scene

The Guardian has put out an absolutely absurd list of the top fifty video games of the 21st century, which prominently features several Nintendo games, including the Switch’s two most notable titles, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. Each Nintendo game on the list and its placement is written below, and you can see the full ranking here.

38. Super Smash Bros Melee

28. Wii Sports

23. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

22. Mario Kart 8

14. Super Mario Odyssey

2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Exclusively with the above context, the list does not look that absurd, even if my own ranking would be totally different. Breath of the Wild is not a shocking pick at all, especially considering how many of us have been completely sucked into that world and its addictive exploration, some of us to the point of breaking the Switch’s play time counter. However, once you see the full post and notice that SingStar places fiftieth, Gears of War 2 randomly clocks in at fortieth, and Minecraft sits at first, well, you might suddenly forget about Breath of the Wild and its high placement. There are several decent picks, but the indie representatives do not make a ton of sense (no Super Meat Boy, no Celeste), and Halo: Combat Evolved over Halo 2 or Halo 3 is a bit off. Minecraft at number one and God of War being on the list at all reeks of recency bias, with Minecraft‘s recent resurgence and God of War being less than two years old, but maybe that’s just me. Regardless, it is cool to see The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild continue to earn one accolade after another, and it is interesting to wonder whether or not it still be revered so much when the century actually is over.
