Nintendo Switch is now four years old; time flies when you’re having fun! Nintendo’s hybrid console launched on March 3, 2017 and has seen tremendous success. After the Wii U’s lackluster performance, it was extremely refreshing to see the big N at the top of its game again. The console’s first year on the market was one of the best years to be a Nintendo fan. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a launch title, which was a solid move considering how highly anticipated it was. Nintendo then followed it up with more first-party titles, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Ever since its brilliant debut four years ago, the Switch has continued to dominate the market. In a recent financial report, Nintendo revealed that the Switch had outsold the Nintendo 3DS. 3DS launched in 2011 with a rough start, but Nintendo was able to turn it around with a price drop and an excellent lineup of games. However, Nintendo Switch has consistently provided its install base with new content since the beginning. The console is also on pace to outsell the Wii, which is currently sitting at just over 100 million units sold. Additionally, unlike its predecessor, Nintendo Switch is home to several amazing third-party titles.
2020 was one of the biggest years for the system as well. This is in most part due to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which has sold over 31.18 million units worldwide. The island simulator has become the second bestselling game on the system, sitting just behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Wii U lives on through ports
The Wii U, despite its shortcomings, was home to an excellent range of first-party games. Unfortunately, those titles were attached to a system with a small player base. Therefore, Nintendo made the wise decision to release these titles on its more successful console. We have seen titles such as Pikmin 3 Deluxe (which became the bestselling game in the series), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and more recently Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. The HD remasters of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are two of the only games yet to arrive, with that supposedly changing later this year.
Happy birthday to Nintendo Switch!
Nintendo Switch is easily one of the best gaming systems. It is home to a wide variety of content, whether it be Nintendo’s own or from another company. After a successful first four years, we are only around halfway through the system’s life cycle. (And rumors and reports of a Switch Pro only continue.) Some of my favorite games have been released for Switch, including the likes of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. 2021 is already looking like another great year to be a Switch owner, with anniversaries taking place and all sorts of titles being released.
