One of my favorite Pokémon spinoffs ever made is the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. First released in Japan in 2005, this rougelike franchise sees you play as a Pokémon as you team up with others to take on missions through a series of dungeons. Now, the beloved franchise is coming to Switch this March with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.
The Mystery Dungeon franchise utilizes a turn-based gameplay system, wherein every step or action you take counts as a turn, thus even movement can be a key part of a winning strategy. Along the way, you will join forces with other Pokémon to take down these dungeons, but generally you’ll only have limited control over them. Of course, the games also reward exploration by placing helpful items throughout the dungeons which you can use to gain an edge in battle.
Little was revealed about the game during today’s Pokémon Direct, but we know a few things for sure. Rescue Team DX is a remake of the original two games, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team for the Gameboy Advance and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team for the Nintendo DS. In addition to the updated art style, Mega Evolutions have been added to the game, so it will be interesting to see how this new mechanic plays out.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is set to launch on March 6th, just before the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year. If you can’t wait that long, however, a demo is available via the eShop right now. Your save data from the demo will carry over to the full version, so be sure to download it and get a head start on your next Pokémon adventure! If you enjoy this demo (or just want to skip over it), you can also pre-purchase the game right now for $59.99.
