agdq 2022 online

Games Done Quick, or GDQ, is a wonderful organization that brings speedrunners together for charitable causes. Top players from around the world stream on a nearly daily basis, but twice a year everyone gathers for a weeklong marathon event. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the last three events, shifting them to an online-only format. That streak is set to continue, as the group’s official Twitter account has just announced that AGDQ 2022 is online-only once again.

AGDQ 2022 goes online-only

After much deliberation, Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) 2022 will be online-only “for the health & safety of staff and participants.” COVID vaccines are now readily available, but the emergence of the Delta variant has complicated the situation. In-person GDQ events tend to be packed, so despite their desire for a return to normalcy, the GDQ staff is playing it safe. As previously announced, AGDQ 2022 will be held from January 9 – 16. Runners who wish to enter or volunteers looking to help can put in their submissions from Sept 24 – Oct 3.

While it’s unfortunate that another marathon has to be online-only, there’s no need to rush things at the cost of safety. GDQ is a highly successful event, raising millions for charity at each marathon. It’s not going anywhere, and we can no doubt look forward to in-person events in the future. In the meantime, AGDQ 2022 should still be a lot of fun as an online-only event, and it’s a great way to support the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
