CES 2020 is upon us, which means it’s time again to delve into the future of computing technology. This year, Alienware brought an interesting idea to the table. Their new Concept UFO prototype transforms your typical gaming rig into a handheld device. But it’s not just a regular handheld system. This PC actually shares some striking similarities with Nintendo Switch.
You’ll likely notice immediately that Concept UFO features detachable controllers that function much like Joy-Con. Like with the Switch, they can be removed and placed on their own docking peripheral to transform them into a more traditional controller. Alienware also included a kickstand on the main unit so you can prop it up on tabletops while you’re playing.
Since Concept UFO is essentially a Windows 10 PC, it could allow full access to your Steam library. The screen boasts a 1200p display, which is just a step above the Switch’s 720p display. The fans on the unit are also pretty loud according to early impressions. However, that’s no surprise for a PC of this size.
Other than that, Alienware would not speak on specifications such as battery life or processing power. This may be due to the fact that it’s technically still a work in progress and there are no current plans for a retail release.
Despite that, Alienware is probably noticing that Nintendo Switch has made quite a splash in the gaming community. It’s likely a good business decision to capitalize on the need for portability.
