With Nintendo’s financial results for Q2 FY2021 out in the wild, revised total game sales for all of the most popular Nintendo Switch games have been released as well. For years now, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been the top-selling Nintendo Switch game, and it is now sitting at 28.99 million units sold. However, that title released on Switch in April 2017. Animal Crossing: New Horizons released in March 2020, and it has already sold an extraordinary 26.04 million units. That puts New Horizons on track to leave Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the dust before long.
Of course, Animal Crossing: New Horizons got off to an almost supernaturally great start upon launch, its sales bolstered by countries entering quarantine over COVID-19. It sold an incredible 11.7 million units within 12 days and 13.4 million units total in its first six weeks of release. That the game has added roughly another 12.6 million units sold in the past seven-ish months reflects enormous ongoing demand. What’s even more impressive is that, back in August, we reported how Mario Kart 8 Deluxe itself has been on a record-setting pace sales-wise.
Essentially, between this data and the amazing increased sales estimates for Nintendo Switch this year, Nintendo can’t lose right now. And don’t forget that Super Mario 3D All-Stars sold 5.21 million copies in its first 12 days of availability.
