Animal Crossing: New Horizons is absolutely unstoppable. This adorable island adventure took the world by storm back in March, and Nintendo‘s quarterly sales reports prove that it has legs. The latest investor briefing, which spans October 1 – December 31, 2020, shows that the very addicting New Horizons title has already eclipsed 30 million sales in just nine months.
New Horizons passes 30 million sales
Nintendo’s previous quarterly briefing put Animal Crossing sales at 26.04 million as of September 30. Over the next three months, sales sped past the 30 million mark to the current total: 31.18 million. That means New Horizons sold over 5 million copies just during the holiday period. It probably found its way under quite a few Christmas trees this year, and like those trees, this game is evergreen.
New Horizons launched at the perfect time for a strong start. Everyone was locked away in their homes and feeling anxious, and it provided us with a soothing dose of escapism. But this game’s impressive sales are far more than just the result of cabin fever. Animal Crossing has truly become one of Nintendo’s strongest franchises with a broad reach that helps expand their audience. That 30 million sales milestone is just the beginning. It’s hot on the trail of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (33.41 million) and will almost certainly surpass it this year. After that, the sky is the limit.
