Animal Crossing: New Horizons UK launch sales break franchise record

Animal Crossing: New Horizons launch sales are the largest in the franchise’s history. The game topped the U.K. retail sales chart last week for physical copies sold, meaning that it was the best-selling game at retail in the region. As you’d expect, this puts the game ahead of anything else, including Doom Eternal, which released on the same day for more platforms.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons launch sales were 3.5 times those of New Leaf. Before March 20, New Leaf previously had the biggest launch sales of any game in the franchise. The game has also just seen the biggest launch of any single Nintendo Switch game since the device launched. However, if launch sales of Pokémon Sword and Shield were combined, they would overtake the game for total sales.

Given that New Leaf launched in 2013 for Nintendo 3DS, one might expect retail sales to be smaller for the first Switch game in the series. Over time, as more and more digital storefronts have popped up, more people prefer to purchase their games digitally. However, retailers in the U.K. have indicated that they saw an increase in customers last weekend, as they prepare for months of self-isolation due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Started out playing Metroid 2 on the GameBoy at around 5 years-old, and now I write about games all day long. Can't play Switch and drive, I've tried. As time goes on the Switch is quickly becoming my favourite console of all time.
