Ash Williams, the protagonist of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy, has been rumored for NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 11 for a while. Now, the most powerful evidence in favor of this character coming to the game is… publisher Warner Bros. itself, apparently. An official email newsletter being sent to subscribers reportedly includes something eye-popping in its otherwise mundane copyright details: direct reference to “‘ASH’ character from ‘ARMY OF DARKNESS.'” Army of Darkness is of course the final film in the Evil Dead trilogy. It would be, uh, peculiar of Warner Bros. to reference the character and the film if there are no plans for him to come to Mortal Kombat 11.
Ash’s actor, Bruce Campbell, previously shot down rumors of Ash Williams coming to Mortal Kombat 11 in a comical tweet. But people note the language being used in the tweet: “Evil Dead‘s Ash will not be appearing.” People are arguing that, if this Ash is taken specifically from Army of Darkness, then it is true that the character is not coming from a movie that has “Evil Dead” in the name. If that’s the case — tricky tricky, Mr. Campbell.

Whatever’s going on, all we can do is wait for NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. to make an announcement.
