Publisher Dangen Entertainment and developer LABS Works have announced a June 3, 2021 release date for Astalon: Tears of the Earth on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s a single-player action platformer with a cute 8-bit visual style that will retail for $19.99, and if the style of its slick promotional art looks familiar at all, it’s because it was created by Dragon Half manga creator Ryusuke Mita.
Like in the Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon games, a core component of Astalon: Tears of the Earth is character swapping, although it seems you will have to find a campfire to make a switch. You can swap among Arias, a fighter with higher defense and short-range sword attacks; Algus, a wizard with magic bolts that can travel through walls; and Kyuli, a rogue with a long-range bow and the ability to jump off of walls. Additionally, although the game doesn’t seem to be a roguelike, death will still make your team stronger, as they can “exchange collected orbs for various skills and upgrades when they reincarnate.” You can increase characters’ strength and defense or buy relics that offer additional perks.
Matt Kap, lead developer on Astalon: Tears of the Earth at LABS Works, says the game’s world draws some surprising influence from Mad Max and Fist of the North Star, so that’s something to keep an eye out for.
With the game’s June release date set, is your interest piqued for Astalon: Tears of the Earth on Nintendo Switch? If not, consider another game Dangen published on Switch last month — Smelter, which combines ActRaiser and Mega Man X.
