Publisher Dear Villagers and developer Artisan Studios have revealed a tabletop strategy minigame for their upcoming JRPG Astria Ascending, and it is called J-Ster. J-Ster draws from the tradition of tabletop and card games like Triple Triad and Tetra Master from Final Fantasy VIII and IX respectively, and a new trailer teases how it will play in Astria Ascending. “Make strategic choices to flip your opponent’s tokens,” says the trailer. “Turn your enemies into tokens or steal them from your rivals to expand your collection and become the J-Ster master!” Many people throughout the game world will be willing to play it with you.
Astria Ascending was announced back in March with Final Fantasy veterans Kazushige Nojima and Hitoshi Sakimoto providing the narrative and soundtrack respectively. The game will contain eight playable character (“Demigods,” actually), five cities with dynamic weather, 25 dungeons, and 30-50 hours of gameplay. Artisan Studios has locations in Quebec, Canada and Paris, France, with a team fluent in English, French, and Japanese, so Astria Ascending is a very international production in the best way.
Astria Ascending with its cool J-Ster tabletop game will launch on September 30, 2021 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Game Pass, and PC. And if you’re interested in more games inspired by Tetra Master, check out the minigame included in Littlewood.
