If you’re yearning for a Star Fox fix since its lackluster appearance on Wii U, you might be interested in upcoming indie Astrodogs. This on-rails shoot ’em up is “inspired by the classics,” featuring plenty of aerial battles across some visually striking levels. We don’t have a release date yet, but developer Dynamic Media Triad has confirmed the game for Nintendo Switch and PC.
The Switch version runs at 720p and 60 FPS in handheld mode, according to a developer Reddit post. That should mean smooth on-the-go shooting in Astrodogs, hopefully an improvement over Star Fox Zero‘s clunky gamepad controls. The game will include four different special weapons and “Instinct” to slown down time for better aiming. And yes, you can do a barrel roll.
The visual style is quite different than that of Star Fox, even with the clear development inspirations. Here’s a quick summary of the world of Astrodogs from Dynamic Media Triad:
Everything seemed to be in its place across the Galaxy until one day Woofer, a giant corporation providing all sorts of services, went rogue and began attacking planets all over the System.
Enter ASTRODOGS, a crew of freelance bounty hunters and possibly our only hope to defeat Woofer. Play as Kombo, the Shiba Ace Pilot and join the crew in this adventure through the stars to save all of puppydom.
Find out the mysterious reasons behind Woofer’s treason as you discover the secrets they definitely don’t want you to know!
A Steam demo is available now as well. In response to a question on the Reddit post, the developer said it will look into a Switch demo, with nothing to confirm yet.
