If you’re a fan of Metroidvania games, it’s time to get excited! Axiom Verge is one of the best in the genre, and its sequel is fast approaching. Axiom Verge 2 was originally revealed on Switch alone with a 2020 release target. Since then, developer Tom Happ has pushed the release back to the first half of 2021, and today he confirmed a second platform. When it comes to PC players, Axiom Verge 2 will be a timed exclusive on the Epic Games Store.
Axiom Verge 2 and the Epic Games Store
In a personal blog post, Happ explained the benefits of the platform, especially in regards to keeping a one-man operation funded. With a wife and child to support, the Epic Games Store offered him the ability to create the game he wanted to make without stressing about performance and sales. However, that doesn’t mean the exclusivity deal will last forever. Happ went on to say that he does intend to release it on Steam at some point in the future.
So what about the previously announced Switch version? Happ re-confirmed the Switch version for 2021, but the timing wasn’t exactly clear beyond that. I followed up via email and learned that he intends to bring the game to Nintendo’s console on the same day as the Epic Games Store. That’s great to hear, considering the game’s strong ties to Nintendo. It feels like just yesterday that former Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime quipped “That looks like Metroid!”
We don’t yet have an exact release date for Axiom Verge 2, but Happ says we can expect it relatively soon. In the meantime, you can brush up on the lore and language of the game by checking out our article on its Sumerian inspirations.
