Ninjala Baymetal

GungHo Online Entertainment is bringing their new multiplayer action game, Ninjala, exclusively to Switch in Spring 2019. That’s terrific, but do you want to know what really sticks out to me about its new teaser trailer? They used a frickin’ Babymetal song as its backing track!

It’s a visceral trailer all-around. Kid ninjas run up and then down the sides of buildings, wielding wholesome weapons and blasting each other with bubblegum bombs. The game will allow for up to 8 players, locally and online, and further impressions for Ninjala can now be found here.

But boy, the decision to pair this trailer with Babymetal’s “Megitsune” really gets me pumped. For those who don’t know, Babymetal is Japan’s most successful music export in years. They’re the first “kawaii metal” band, where the songs are sung and danced to by J-pop idols, but the music itself is simultaneously performed by shredding master musicians. In theory, it should be a train wreck, but in reality, Babymetal’s second album ranked the highest on the Billboard 200 for any Japanese artist since 1963.

I love this group so much that I got on a plane for the first time in my life just to see their first US concert in 2014. So if I can report on new Switch games and spread the gospel of Babymetal at the same time, then heck yes I will do that!
