Announced during the Xbox Series X Games Showcase, Balan Wonderworld is a 3D platformer coming from Square Enix and its new Balan Company studio. The game will release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC in spring 2021. Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka and Sonic’s character designer Naoto Ohshima teamed up again to develop this new adventure, which the former teased last year.
Details about the story are scarce so far, but the mechanics look interesting. You’ll play as one of two children who gain magical abilities by donning costumes, over 80 in all. There are 12 different stories to experience in Wonderworld, so it seems like there’s a good amount of content. Two players may play as well.
It might be strange to see Sonic’s creators making a game like Balan Wonderworld for Square Enix, but Naka has been with the company since early 2018 and Ohshima has been doing work for Nintendo spinoff games like Hey! Pikmin. I’m glad to see them working together again at the Balan Company.
I gotta say, I love the “NiGHTS into Dreams meets old-timey theater” aesthetic going on, and it looks like many of the ideas from Sonic Colors and other spinoff games are being used. The platforming looks tight, if not a bit simple, and I’m looking forward to seeing all of the different things you’ll be able to do.
You can check out the Balan Wonderworld official site, which has more little details about the game and its characters to peruse.
