Balan Wonderworld is the result of a really special series of events, so we’re rooting for this platformer adventure from Square Enix and its newly formed Balan Company. The game is a new IP developed by Sonic the Hedgehog co-creators Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima, the latter of whom is character designer here. And Square Enix has today revealed the Balan Wonderworld opening movie, a majestic and enticing video that introduces you to a fantastical new world.
The protagonists are wide-eyed Leo Craig and Emma Cole, who go to a theater and meet the “enigmatic maestro” Balan, who in turn brings them to Wonderworld. This is played out in the opening movie. There is also a villain named Lance who can trap people inside their own hearts, creating “monsters out of negativity.” But otherwise, not a ton has been divulged about the story, except that there will be 12 different tales to play out.
Amid the varied platforming gameplay thoughout Balan Wonderworld, you will collect over 80 unique costumes with different special powers. There will also be cute creatures called Tims that are “born from the happiness felt by inhabitants of the real world.” It sounds like interacting with Tims on the Island of Tims will be reminiscent of interacting with Chaos in the Chao Garden in Sonic Adventure.
What do you think of the beautiful Balan Wonderworld opening movie? Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima’s next big adventure launches March 26, 2021 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
